03What to know
- Etching
- Marble, limestone and travertine are calcareous and react with acids such as lemon, wine and some cleaners. Honed finishes hide etching better than polished.
- Sealing
- Most stone should be sealed at installation and resealed periodically. Sealing slows staining; it does not prevent etching.
- Lot variation
- Stone from the same quarry varies block to block. Large areas are ordered from one lot and dry-laid for approval.
